Some of the people were supported to buy and prepare their own food. This meant staff were able to accommodate people’s individual preferences. This inspection took place on 4 July 2018 and was unannounced. We inspected this service because we received information giving us concerns about the safety and quality of care.

Greenacres is a large care home in Holmfirth, with capacity to house 64 residents. Greenacres caters for adults over 65 including people with dementia. We employ people at all levels who help our organisation deliver quality care to our residents. As the number of older adults who require long-term dementia and nursing care continues to rise, more families than ever... Norman Hudson Care Home is situated in the village of Lockwood, Huddersfield. Greenacres, operated by Ideal Carehomes, is a residential and dementia care home based on Huddersfield Road in Meltham.
Improvements had been made to the environment of the residential care unit. During the visit we observed staff providing support to people in a sensitive and dignified way. People told us that entertainers visited regularly however, people also said that on a daily basis not a lot went on at the home. Some people said that they were not bothered about activities each day as they liked to chat with others and also said they enjoyed their own company. We found there were not enough staff to meet people's needs.
Care Quality Commission (CQC) rating
People and their relatives told us they felt safe living at this service as they were well supported and their health care needs were met. On the day of this inspection the registered manager was not on site. The registered provider had recently appointed a workforce development manager and comprehensive training was completed in-house. We saw evidence of staff supervision and appraisals being completed.
We call this the ‘Short Observational Framework for Inspection . We saw the home used a system of pre prepared meals which, on the day of our visit, were badly prepared and presented. However a senior manager told us they had previously left instruction for the fish and chips meal not to be used and for people to enjoy that meal bought in from a local fish and chip shop. The senior manager assured us that the standard of all other meals from this supplier was very good. They also made arrangements for people who had not enjoyed their meal to be served an alternative. Care homes are a vital part of today's social care system, providing services for vulnerable people and the elderly across the country.

You’ll find us a quarter of a mile from the town centre in a pleasant setting overlooking Shroggs Park and the countryside beyond. The care at this home surpasses any other care home I know about. The attention and dedication of the staff is wonderful - a lot to be said for the excellent management. We found Greenacres very professional, friendly and helpful, our questions were answered. It's very upsetting when a loved one needs more care than you can give them, Greenacres seems to have... I have always felt very welcome when visiting my auntie in the home.
All food in the home uses the best locally sourced ingredients and is prepared freshly on-site. Ratings are provided by Care Quality Commission and reflects the most recent report for this care home, which was published on 16 October 2018. The residency has been registered with the Care Quality Commission since February 2016. In October 2018, the CQC rewarded the home with an overall rating of requires improvement.

These are separately called Tom Wroe Unit, Huddersfield Adult Memory Disorders Unit and Living Well Street. Each floor has separate bathrooms and toilets and communal areas. At the time of the inspection there were a total of 17 people living there. There is a manager based on each unit with an overall manager for the whole service. Living Well Street and Tom Wroe Unit is registered to provide residential care for up to 46 older people. The home is set over three floors with Living Well Street as a dedicated floor for people living with dementia.
Visiting our marketing suite is a great way to find out more about our home and the lifestyle – we look forward to seeing you soon. My husband is very happy at Greenacres and I am extremely satisfied with the level of care he has received to date. My family and I have peace of mind knowing that he is receiving the best care and attention possible.
The Mayor of Meltham, Cllr Richard Noon, joined in the celebrations and some families were reunited with loved ones that they hadn’t seen since before the pandemic. In some cases, residents got to meet their great grandchildren for the very first time. Then, on Sunday, residents were treated to more entertainment and a posh afternoon tea with staff dressed up in red, white and blue and the care home decked in bunting and flags. Activities were provided but this was not at a level which would meet the needs of all the people living at the home.
